BACKGROUND: Obstructive sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS) is a chronic breathing disorder characterized by recurrent upper airway obstruction during sleep. Although previous studies have shown a link between OSAHS and depressive mood, the neurobiological mechanisms underlying mood disorders in OSAHS patients remain poorly understood. This study aims to investigate the emotion processing mechanism in OSAHS patients with depressive mood using event-related potentials (ERPs). METHODS: Seventy-four OSAHS patients were divided into the depressive mood and non-depressive mood groups according to their Self-rating Depression Scale (SDS) scores. Patients underwent overnight polysomnography and completed various cognitive and emotional questionnaires. The patients were shown facial images displaying positive, neutral, and negative emotions and tasked to identify the emotion category, while their visual evoked potential was simultaneously recorded. RESULTS: The two groups did not differ significantly in age, BMI, and years of education, but showed significant differences in their slow wave sleep ratio (P = 0.039), ESS (P = 0.006), MMSE (P < 0.001), and MOCA scores (P = 0.043). No significant difference was found in accuracy and response time on emotional face recognition between the two groups. N170 latency in the depressive group was significantly longer than the non-depressive group (P = 0.014 and 0.007) at the bilateral parieto-occipital lobe, while no significant difference in N170 amplitude was found. No significant difference in P300 amplitude or latency between the two groups. Furthermore, N170 amplitude at PO7 was positively correlated with the arousal index and negatively with MOCA scores (both P < 0.01). CONCLUSION: OSAHS patients with depressive mood exhibit increased N170 latency and impaired facial emotion recognition ability. Special attention towards the depressive mood among OSAHS patients is warranted for its implications for patient care.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to establish and validate a Susceptibility-weighted imaging (SWI)-based predictive model for neonatal intracranial haemorrhage (ICH). METHODS: A total of 1190 neonates suspected of ICH after cranial ultrasound screening in a tertiary hospital were retrospectively enrolled. The neonates were randomly divided into a training cohort and a internal validation cohort by a ratio of 7:3. Univariate analysis was used to analyze the correlation between risk factors and ICH, and the prediction model of neonatal ICH was established by multivariate logistic regression based on minimum Akaike information criterion (AIC). The nomogram was externally validated in another tertiary hospital of 91 neonates. The performance of the nomogram was evaluated in terms of discrimination by the area under the curve (AUC), calibration by the calibration curve and clinical net benefit by the decision curve analysis (DCA). RESULTS: Univariate analysis and min AIC-based multivariate logistic regression screened the following variables to establish a predictive model for neonatal ICH: Platelet count (PLT), gestational diabetes, mode of delivery, amniotic fluid contamination, 1-min Apgar score. The AUC was 0.715, 0.711, and 0.700 for the training cohort, internal validation cohort, and external validation cohort, respectively. The calibration curve showed a good correlation between the nomogram prediction and actual observation for ICH. DCA showed the nomogram was clinically useful. CONCLUSION: We developed and validated an easy-to-use nomogram to predict ICH for neonates. This model could support individualized risk assessment and healthcare.

An increasing number of measurement electrodes have been designed to satisfy the demand for high-resolution detection using galvanic logging technology in complex formations. The forward modeling response analysis of logging tools has important guiding significance in the design of galvanic logging tools. Based on a three-dimensional finite element numerical simulation method, we established a forward model of galvanic multi-electrodes in a complex formation. We also designed a symmetrical resistance network model of the formation with equivalent resistance between two electrodes. A symmetrical resistance network was derived using the balanced bridge method. The asymmetrical admittance matrix was extended to a symmetrical extended admittance matrix to realize a convenient calculation of the equivalent symmetrical resistance network in complex formations. Verification of the microcolumn-focused logging tool, with nine electrodes in a simulated standard well, and an evaluation of the degree of invasion in an actual oil well indicate that this calibration method can improve the measurement accuracy of galvanic logging instruments.

However, it is still difficult for clinicians to establish prognostic stratifications and therapeutic strategies because of the lack of tools for predicting the survival of triple-negative breast cancer patients with liver metastases (TNBC-LM). Based on clinical data from large populations, a sensitive and discriminative nomogram was developed and validated to predict the prognosis of TNBC patients with LM at initial diagnosis or at the later course. Introduction/background: Liver metastasis (LM) in TNBC patients is associated with significant morbidity and mortality. The objective of this study was to construct a clinical model to predict the survival of TNBC-LM patients. Materials and methods: Clinicopathologic data were retrieved from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database and the Fifth Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-Sen University (FAFSYU). Based on patients with newly diagnosed TNBC with LM (nTNBC-LM) from the SEER database, a predictive nomogram was established and validated. Its predictive effect on TNBC patients with LM at later disease course by enrolling TNBC patients from FAFSYU who developed LM later. The prognostic effect of different treatment for nTNBC-LM was further assessed. Results: A prognostic model was developed and validated to predict the prognosis of TNBC-LM patients. For LM patients diagnosed at the initial or later treatment stage, the C-index (0.712, 0.803 and 0.699 in the training, validation and extended groups, respectively) and calibration plots showed the acceptable prognostic accuracy and clinical applicability of the nomogram. Surgical resection on the primary tumour and chemotherapy were found to be associated with significantly better overall survival (OS). Conclusion: A sensitive and discriminative model was developed to predict OS in TNBC-LM patients both at and after initial diagnosis.

Ferroptosis is a form of controlled cell death that was first described relatively recently and that is dependent on the formation and accumulation of lipid free radicals through an iron-mediated mechanism. A growing body of evidence supports the close relationship between pathogenic infections and ferroptotic cell death, particularly for viral infections. Ferroptosis is also closely tied to the pathogenic development of hepatic steatosis and other forms of liver disease. Fowl adenovirus serotype 4 (FAdV-4) is a hepatotropic aviadenovirus causing hydropericardium syndrome (HPS) that is capable of impacting fat metabolism. However, it remains uncertain as to what role, if any, ferroptotic death plays in the context of FAdV-4 infection. Here, FAdV-4 was found to promote ferroptosis via the p53-SLC7A11-GPX4 axis, while ferrostain-1 was capable of inhibiting this FAdV-4-mediated ferroptotic death through marked reductions in lipid peroxidation. The incidence of FAdV-4-induced fatty liver was also found to be associated with the activation of ferroptotic activity. Together, these results offer novel insights regarding potential approaches to treating HPS.

The efficient delivery of therapeutic proteins to tumor sites is a promising cancer treatment modality. Hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs) have been successfully used for the protective encapsulation of proteins; however, easy precipitation and lack of controlled release of existing HOFs limit their further application for protein delivery in vivo. In this study, a hypoxia-responsive HOF, self-assembled from azobenzenedicarboxylate/polyethylene glycol-conjugated azobenzenedicarboxylate and tetrakis(4-amidiniumphenyl)methane through charge-assisted hydrogen-bonding, is developed for systemic protein delivery to tumor cells. The newly generated HOF platform efficiently encapsulates representative cytochrome C, demonstrating good dispersibility under physiological conditions. Moreover, it can respond to overexpressed reductases in the cytoplasm under hypoxic conditions, inducing fast intracellular protein release to exert therapeutic effects. The strategy presented herein can be applied to other therapeutic proteins and can be expanded to encompass more intrinsic tumor microenvironment stimuli. OBJECTIVES: The clinical data of patients with subaortic stenosis who underwent surgical treatment in our centre in the past 12 years were reviewed. The short-term and long-term clinical outcomes were analyzed, and the long-term outcomes of different surgical methods for subaortic stenosis were compared to determine the optimal surgical treatment strategy for subaortic stenosis. METHODS: From December 2010 to December 2022, 90 patients undergoing surgical treatment for subaortic stenosis in our hospital were enrolled. There were 55 males and 35 females with a median age of 72 (46,132) months and an average surgical weight of (21.35 ± 15.84) kg. According to the operation method, 90 patients were divided into group A (50 patients with simple subaortic membrane resection) and group B (40 patients with subaortic membrane and muscle resection or modified Konno procedure). RESULTS: There were three early deaths (3.33%). One late death occurred in group B. There was no significant difference in long-term survival rate between the two groups (p = 0.904). The preoperative left ventricular outflow tract pressure gradient in group B was (91.56 ± 36.98) mm Hg, which was higher than that in group A(51.13 ± 36.04)mm Hg(p < 0.001). There was no significant difference in immediate postoperative left ventricular outflow tract pressure gradient between group B [(5.44 ± 8.43) mm Hg] and group A [(7.82 ± 13.44) mm Hg] (p = 0.343). In the long-term follow-up, left ventricular outflow tract pressure gradient in group B was (5.86 ± 9.53) mm Hg, which was not statistically significant compared with group A (8.83 ± 14.52) mm Hg (p = 0.294). Eleven patients with moderate or greater aortic regurgitation (group A/group B: 3/8) underwent simultaneous aortic valvuloplasty. In group B, moderate or greater aortic regurgitation was significantly improved immediately after operation (p = 0.013) and was not significantly aggravated in long-term follow-up (p = 0.083), and there was no significant improvement in group A after operation and long-term follow-up. CONCLUSIONS: According to the different anatomical lesions of left ventricular outflow tract, the individualised surgical treatment strategy for patients with subaortic stenosis can achieve good long-term outcomes. The long-term survival rate and freedom from reoperation due to late left ventricular outflow tract obstruction after simple subaortic membrane resection and extended left ventricular outflow tract resection are comparable. For patients with moderate or greater aortic regurgitation before extended left ventricular outflow tract resection, simultaneous aortic valvuloplasty is beneficial to improve postoperative aortic valve function.

Objective: Acupuncture, acknowledged as a potent non-pharmacological therapy, is frequently employed to alleviate pain. Despite its widespread use, there has been a lack of overarching bibliometric analysis of clinical research on acupuncture analgesia. We aimed to summarize current patterns, hotspots, and development trends in this field through bibliometric analysis. Methods: This study evaluates academic publications retrieved from the Web of Science database (2010.01-2023.09) concerning acupuncture analgesia in clinical settings. All primary and secondary studies on humans were included. To track global developmental trends, we employed several software for analyzing annual publication volumes, countries/regions, institutions, authors, cited authors, journals, cited journals, references, and keywords and to draw collaborative networks and reference co-citation network maps. Results: The final search encompassed 7,190 relevant studies, including 1,263 randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and 1,293 systematic reviews and meta-analyses. The results indicated a gradual increase in the number of annual publications on acupuncture analgesia in clinical practice. Among countries and institutions, China (2,139) and Chengdu University of Traditional Chinese Medicine (258) ranked first. Liang FR (89 articles) was the most prolific author, while MacPherson H (604) was the most cited author. MEDICINE (455) was the most productive journal, and Pain (2,473/0.20) ranked first in both the frequency and centrality of cited journals. Notably, the most frequently cited reference was a systematic review of individual patient data on acupuncture carried out for chronic pain that was published by Vickers Andrew J in 2012 (156). Burst analysis identified frontier research areas for 2010-2020, encompassing network meta-analysis, case reports, dry needling, lumbar disc herniation, cancer, post-herpetic neuralgia, insomnia, and bibliometric analysis. Conclusion: This study outlines current trends and potential future research hotspots in clinical acupuncture analgesia over the past decade. Findings emphasize the necessity for enhanced international collaboration to improve research output and translation.

The catalytic asymmetric [3 + 2] cycloaddition of racemic norcaradienes with quinones to construct multicyclic hydrodibenzofurans was achieved by the use of chiral N,N'-dioxide/metal complex catalysts. Kinetic resolution of norcaradienes accompanied by partial racemization occurred, and one enantiomer in prior acted as the C2 synthon to participate in diastereoselective cycloaddition. An enantiodivergent synthesis via a switch of metal ions was observed when naphthoquinone was used as the partner. DFT calculations revealed the profiles of the cycloaddition processes.

The soldier caste is one of the most distinguished castes inside the termite colony. The mechanism of soldier caste differentiation has mainly been studied at the transcriptional level, but the function of microRNAs (miRNAs) in soldier caste differentiation is seldom studied. In this study, the workers of Coptotermes formosanus Shiraki were treated with methoprene, a juvenile hormone analog which can induce workers to transform into soldiers. The miRNomes of the methoprene-treated workers and the controls were sequenced. Then, the differentially expressed miRNAs (DEmiRs) were corrected with the differentially expressed genes DEGs to construct the DEmiR-DEG regulatory network. Afterwards, the DEmiR-regulated DEGs were subjected to GO enrichment and KEGG enrichment analysis. A total of 1,324 miRNAs were identified, among which 116 miRNAs were screened as DEmiRs between the methoprene-treated group and the control group. A total of 4,433 DEmiR-DEG pairs were obtained. No GO term was recognized as significant in the cellular component, molecular function, or biological process categories. The KEGG enrichment analysis of the DEmiR-regulated DEGs showed that the ribosome biogenesis in eukaryotes and circadian rhythm-fly pathways were enriched. This study demonstrates that DEmiRs and DEGs form a complex network regulating soldier caste differentiation in termites.

Silicon carbide (SiC) ceramics with high bending strength were prepared by hot pressing sintering (HPS) with yttrium aluminum garnet (Y3Al5O12, YAG) as sintering additive, and the effects of YAG content and sintering temperature on the sintering behavior, microstructure and mechanical properties of SiC ceramics were investigated in detail. The uniform distribution of YAG to form a liquid phase and the driving force provided by hot pressing sintering decrease the sintering temperature, improve the densification of SiC ceramics, and refine the crystal size. By means of suitable sintering conditions with the additional amount of YAG of 5 wt%, the sintering temperature of 1950 °C and a pressure of 30 MPa, the resultant SiC/YAG composite ceramics possesses high sintering and mechanical properties with the relative density of 98.53%, the bending strength of 675 MPa, the Vickers hardness of up to 17.92 GPa, and the elastic modulus of 386 GPa. The as-prepared SiC/YAG composite ceramics are promisingly used as the dry gas seal materials in the centrifugal compressors.

Banna virus (BAV) is the prototype Seadornavirus, a class of reoviruses for which there has been little structural study. Here, we report atomic cryo-EM structures of three states of BAV virions-surrounded by 120 spikes (full virions), 60 spikes (partial virions), or no spikes (cores). BAV cores are double-layered particles similar to the cores of other non-turreted reoviruses, except for an additional protein component in the outer capsid shell, VP10. VP10 was identified to be a cementing protein that plays a pivotal role in the assembly of BAV virions by directly interacting with VP2 (inner capsid), VP8 (outer capsid), and VP4 (spike). Viral spikes (VP4/VP9 heterohexamers) are situated on top of VP10 molecules in full or partial virions. Asymmetrical electrostatic interactions between VP10 monomers and VP4 trimers are disrupted by high pH treatment, which is thus a simple way to produce BAV cores. Low pH treatment of BAV virions removes only the flexible receptor binding protein VP9 and triggers significant conformational changes in the membrane penetration protein VP4. BAV virions adopt distinct spatial organization of their surface proteins compared with other well-studied reoviruses, suggesting that BAV may have a unique mechanism of penetration of cellular endomembranes.

Objective: Recently, 10 plasmid-mediated mobile colistin resistance genes, mcr-1 to mcr-10, and their variants have been identified, posing a new threat to the treatment of clinical infections caused by Gram-negative bacteria. Our objective was to develop a rapid, sensitive, and accurate molecular assay for detecting mcr genes in clinical isolates. Methods: The primers and corresponding TaqMan-MGB probes were designed based on the sequence characteristics of all reported MCR family genes, multiplex Taqman-MGB probe-based qPCR assays were developed and optimized, and the sensitivity, specificity and reproducibility of the method were evaluated. The assay contained 8 sets of primers and probes in 4 reaction tubes, each containing 2 sets of primers and probes. Results: The standard curves for both the single and multiplex systems showed good linearity (R2 > 0.99) between the starting template amount and the Ct value, with a lower limit of detection of 102 copies/µL. The specificity test showed positive amplification results only for strains containing the mcr genes, whereas the other strains were negative. The results of intra-and inter-group repeatability experiments demonstrated the stability and reliability of the newly developed method. It was used to detect mcr genes in 467 clinically-obtained Gram-negative isolates, which were multidrug-resistant. Twelve strains containing the mcr genes were detected (seven isolates carrying mcr-1, four isolates carrying mcr-10, and one isolate carrying mcr-9). The products amplified by the full-length PCR primer were identified by sequencing, and the results were consistent with those of the multiplex qPCR method. Conclusion: The assay developed in this study has the advantages of high specificity, sensitivity, and reproducibility. It can be used to specifically detect drug-resistant clinical isolates carrying the mcr genes (mcr-1 to mcr-10), thus providing a better basis for clinical drug treatment and drug resistance research.

Evidence of the potential causal links between long-term exposure to particulate matters (PM, i.e., PM1, PM2.5, and PM1-2.5) and T2DM mortality based on large cohorts is limited. In contrast, the existing evidence usually suffers from inherent bias with the traditional association assessment. A prospective cohort of 580,757 participants in the southern region of China were recruited during 2009 and 2015 and followed up through December 2020. PM exposure at each residential address was estimated by linking to the well-established high-resolution simulation dataset. Hazard ratios (HRs) were calculated using time-varying marginal structural Cox models, an established causal inference approach, after adjusting for potential confounders. During follow-up, a total of 717 subjects died from T2DM. For every 1 µg/m3 increase in PM2.5, the adjusted HRs and 95% confidence interval (CI) for T2DM mortality was 1.036 (1.019-1.053). Similarly, for every 1 µg/m3 increase in PM1 and PM1-2.5, the adjusted HRs and 95% CIs were 1.032 (1.003-1.062) and 1.085 (1.054-1.116), respectively. Additionally, we observed a generally more pronounced impact among individuals with lower levels of education or lower residential greenness which as measured by the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI). We identified substantial interactions between NDVI and PM1 (P-interaction = 0.003), NDVI and PM2.5 (P-interaction = 0.019), as well as education levels and PM1 (P-interaction = 0.049). The study emphasizes the need to consider environmental and socio-economic factors in strategies to reduce T2DM mortality. We found that PM1, PM2.5, and PM1-2.5 heighten the peril of T2DM mortality, with education and green space exposure roles in modifying it.

An unprecedented fluoroarylation of 1,1-difluoroallenes with a cost-effective nucleophilic fluoride reagent and aryldiazonium salts is reported. This visible light promoted gold-catalyzed reaction allows a stereo- and regioselective incorporation of both the fluorine atom and aryl group, enabling a straightforward construction of multi-substituted trifluoromethyl alkenes. Under the mild reaction conditions, a nice tolerance of diverse functional groups is achieved. The high regioselectivity for fluorine-incorporation is rationalized by considering the thermodynamic driving force of trifluoromethyl group formation, whereas the counterintuitive stereoselectivity that aryl is installed on the side of the bulkier γ-substituent is interpreted by alleviating the increasing 1,3-allylic interaction in the gold-coordinated allene intermediate en route to the product.

Photorealistic stylization of 3D scenes aims to generate photorealistic images from arbitrary novel views according to a given style image, while ensuring consistency when rendering video from different viewpoints. Some existing stylization methods using neural radiance fields can effectively predict stylized scenes by combining the features of the style image with multi-view images to train 3D scenes. However, these methods generate novel view images that contain undesirable artifacts. In addition, they cannot achieve universal photorealistic stylization for a 3D scene. Therefore, a stylization image needs to retrain a 3D scene representation network based on a neural radiation field. We propose a novel photorealistic 3D scene stylization transfer framework to address these issues. It can realize photorealistic 3D scene style transfer with a 2D style image for novel view video rendering. We first pre-trained a 2D photorealistic style transfer network, which can satisfy the photorealistic style transfer between any content image and style image. Then, we use voxel features to optimize a 3D scene and obtain the geometric representation of the scene. Finally, we jointly optimize a hypernetwork to realize the photorealistic style transfer of arbitrary style images. In the transfer stage, we use a pre-trained 2D photorealistic network to constrain the photorealistic style of different views and different style images in the 3D scene. The experimental results show that our method not only realizes the 3D photorealistic style transfer of arbitrary style images, but also outperforms the existing methods in terms of visual quality and consistency. Osteoporosis is a major clinical problem in many autoimmune diseases, including primary biliary cholangitis (PBC), the most common autoimmune liver disease. Osteoporosis is a major cause of fracture and related mortality. However, it remains unclear whether PBC confers a causally risk-increasing effect on osteoporosis. Herein, we aimed to investigate the causal relationship between PBC and osteoporosis and whether the relationship is independent of potential confounders. We performed bidirectional Mendelian randomization (MR) analyses to investigate the association between PBC (8021 cases and 16,489 controls) and osteoporosis in Europeans (the UK Biobank and FinnGen Consortium: 12,787 cases and 726,996 controls). The direct effect of PBC on osteoporosis was estimated using multivariable MR analyses. An independent replication was conducted in East Asians (PBC: 2495 cases and 4283 controls; osteoporosis: 9794 cases and 168,932 controls). Trans-ethnic meta-analysis was performed by pooling the MR estimates of Europeans and East Asians. Inverse-variance weighted analyses revealed that genetic liability to PBC was associated with a higher risk of osteoporosis in Europeans (OR, 1.040; 95% CI, 1.016-1.064; P = 0.001). Furthermore, the causal effect of PBC on osteoporosis persisted after adjusting for BMI, calcium, lipidemic traits, and sex hormones. The causal relationship was further validated in the East Asians (OR, 1.059; 95% CI, 1.023-1.096; P = 0.001). Trans-ethnic meta-analysis confirmed that PBC conferred increased risk on osteoporosis (OR, 1.045; 95% CI, 1.025-1.067; P = 8.17 × 10-6). Our data supports a causal effect of PBC on osteoporosis, and the causality is independent of BMI, calcium, triglycerides, and several sex hormones.

Amputation dehorning (AD) is a common practice performed on calves, causing harmful effects such as pain, distress, anxiety, and fear. These effects extend to behavioral, physiological, and hematological responses, prompting serious ethical concerns regarding animal welfare, even when performed with local anesthesia. Meloxicam, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug, has been widely used to mitigate the side effects of dehorning and disbudding in calves. However, there is a notable gap in research regarding the effects of meloxicam on calves aged 6 weeks to 6 mo undergoing AD procedures. This study was designed to assess the effectiveness of co-administering meloxicam with lidocaine, a cornual nerve anesthetic, in alleviating the adverse effects caused by the AD procedure in calves within this age range, compared with the use of lidocaine alone. Thirty Holstein calves were enrolled and randomly divided into 2 groups. The first group (Placebo) received a subcutaneous injection of 5 mL of lidocaine in the horn area and a subcutaneous injection of 0.9% saline at a dose of 0.025 mL/kg in the neck, administered 10 min before the AD procedure. The second group (MX) received a combination of lidocaine and meloxicam: a subcutaneous injection of 5 mL of lidocaine in the horn area and a subcutaneous injection of 20 mg/mL meloxicam at a dose of 0.025 mL/kg in the neck, also administered 10 min before the AD procedure. To avoid subjective bias, the researchers were blinded to the treatment groups. Pain-related behaviors, including tail flicking, head shaking, ear flicking, head rubbing, head crossing bar, and kicking, were observed, and physiological parameters, including heart rate, rectal temperature, respiration rate, mechanical nociceptive threshold (MNT), daily active steps, and food intake were monitored. Hematological conditions were determined using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays and routine blood tests. The data were processed using a generalized linear mixed model (GLMM). The outcomes demonstrated that the AD procedure increased the frequencies of ear flicking and resulted in rises in the respiration rate, heart rate, rectal temperature, and daily active steps. It also led to decreases in total food intake, forage intake, hay intake, MNT, and increased concentrations of prostaglandin E2 (PgE2), interleukin-1ß (IL-1ß), tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), nitric oxide (NO), and malondialdehyde, as well as glutathione peroxidase activity. However, calves that received meloxicam treatment showed significant improvements in response to the AD procedure, including lower respiration rates, heart rates, and rectal temperatures; higher MNTs; and lower intermediate cell ratio. They also had higher red blood counts, hemoglobin levels, hematocrit values; larger mean platelet volumes; and lower concentrations of PgE2, IL-1ß, TNF-α, and NO. These results suggest that co-administration of lidocaine and meloxicam may aid in mitigating the adverse impacts induced by the AD procedure on these calves, thereby supporting the use of meloxicam in conjunction with a local anesthetic in AD procedures for calves aged 6 weeks to 6 mo.
